    Trump announces Iran sanctions

President Donald J. Trump has declared an unprecedented campaign of economic warfare and isolation against Iran, labeling it the "MOST OVERWHELMING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER EXECUTED AGAINST ANY COUNTRY." The United States will target any country, financial institution, company, airport, or government entity that provides Iran with a "lifeline." These targeted lifelines include oil smuggling, financial transfers, currency exchanges, ship registries, and shell companies. This announcement marks a significant shift in rhetoric compared to repeated public statements by the administration in recent months. Previously, the administration stated that negotiations with Iran were progressing well and that an agreement was near. As recently as August 5, Trump said negotiations were "going quite well." On July 28, he described discussions with Iran as a "beautiful discussion" and said the door remained open for an agreement. These positive statements came despite the June Memorandum of Understanding collapsing. The 60-day negotiation window expired without a broader agreement. Iran and the United States remained deeply divided over the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions, and the U.S. military presence in the region. Today's announcement marks another significant turn in the administration's carrot-and-stick strategy toward Tehran. Trump is declaring that Iran is on the verge of collapse while imposing substantially broader economic pressure intended to force a resolution. He reiterated that Iran will never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. #Politics
