In the Bedroom Sissy Spacek

A Maine doctor and his wife, their only son, an older woman he loves, and the angry ex-husband still in her orbit. That is the setup of In the Bedroom, and it is not really what the movie is about. What it is about is what happens after tragedy arrives and the justice system gives nobody anything close to comfort. Ordinary people get pushed past a breaking point, and the film refuses to look away or make it pretty. Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson play the parents, and the partnership between them is exceptional. Two actors who never overplay a single note while everything underneath them gives way. Their late-night arguments hit harder than most action sequences, and none of it needs a swelling score or a big speech to land. Spacek's work here belongs with the greatest performances of the 2000s, and I still think it is underrated. The Golden Globe nomination was the floor, not the ceiling. What she does with rage and blame and silence, all inside one look, is genuinely terrifying. She is not performing the pain, she is living in it. In the Bedroom came out in 2001 and remains a devastating portrait of grief. Quiet cinema that leaves bruises.
