George Michael and Anselmo Feleppa

What Older and Jesus to a Child are carrying is a whole person. Anselmo Feleppa was George Michael's boyfriend, and the way Michael told it, Feleppa opened up a kind of love and freedom he'd never had access to. Rio de Janeiro, 1991, is where their paths crossed, and a brief stretch sharing a place in Los Angeles after that gave Michael a real look at the affection he'd spent years keeping out of sight. Then the diagnosis landed: Feleppa was HIV positive. He went home to Brazil, and in March 1993 an AIDS-related brain haemorrhage killed him. Learning about the diagnosis, Michael said later, ranked as "the darkest, most frightening time" he'd been through. The very next day after Feleppa's death, Michael told his parents he was gay. Grief had to go somewhere, so it went into the records, and Jesus to a Child is hauntingly beautiful in a way that only makes sense once you know what's underneath it 🍿
