Shaquille O'Neal says he only ever played the bully on the basketball court, he didn’t want anyone outplaying him in front of his family. Off the court, it’s a different story. He won’t turn down a kid asking for an autograph because belittling people just doesn’t make sense to him. His philosophy is simple: you treat people how you expect to be treated, and since people show him honor, he returns the favor. As he puts it, “It’s nice to be important, but it’s important to be nice.”

It's nice to be important, but it's important to be nice. I am who I am, so why do I have to belittle you? Why do I have to belittle him, belittle her? Makes no sense. I'm a bully only in a certain area of my life. That was basketball. Because I didn't want anybody to outplay me in front of my family. It's never going to happen. But in real life, when you see a kid and the kid says, Mr. Shaq can have autograph. Why would I say, get out of my face, kid. Don't make sense. You treat people as you expect them to treat you. So people treat me with honor, so I have to return the favor.
