The U.S. is welcoming Taiwan's 2027 budget proposal to boost defense spending to over 3 percent of GDP. In a message to Taiwan Plus, a U.S. State Department spokesperson said the move demonstrates Taiwan's resolve to strengthen its self-defense capabilities. They also reaffirmed Washington's commitment to supporting Taiwan's acquisition of critical defense capabilities to help deter growing threats from China. The government's cabinet has proposed a record US$35 billion in defense spending for next year, about 3.9% of GDP. The proposal now goes to the opposition-controlled legislature for review.
