Did you know? When farmers wrap a tree branch in mud, it's actually the highest form of recognition they can give an outstanding fruit tree. That's because these trees are typically highly productive, and the quality of their fruit is exceptionally good. So farmers will make a few cuts on their branches creating a noticeable wound. They then create a bandage from straw and wet mud and meticulously wrap it around the wounded branch. Finally, they cover it all with a layer of waterproof plastic film. After about a month strong, tough roots will sprout from the wrapped section. All that is left is to cut the branch off right below the new roots, and you have a perfect clone of the parent tree, because it developed from a mature branch. It means that once planted, it completely skips the 5-10 year juvenile growth stage. It can start bearing fruit in just one year, and the fruit's quality is just as excellent as the parent tree's furthermore. The new plant is shorter which makes harvesting the fruit much easier. This is the air layering technique, a method for rapidly cultivating an entire orchard of high-quality fruit trees.
