The moment Thor breaks Odin out of prison, he tells his father that Mjolnir was stolen by someone calling himself the God of Hammers. So the two head straight to the realm of the dwarves, who forged the hammer to try tracking it down, but only for them to arrive and find the entire place wiped out with every single dwarf slaughtered, and all of it done by Mjolnir itself. Thor then gives the dwarves a proper funeral. Still, out of nowhere, he and Odin get teleported to Jotunheim, the land of the giants, where Loki reveals that next to a pile of dead giants, Mjolnir had gone completely rogue, tearing through every realm and causing as much destruction as it possibly could. And right as Loki explains that this god of hammers apparently planned to reshape the entire world, Tiff suddenly shows up as well, teleporting Thor away to show him that Earth had also just been hit by a storm of Mjolnir. Though now completely out of patience, Thor pours every bit of his power into summoning Mjolnir to his side, and the call actually works, but only for the hammer to instantly start beating him down before revealing itself as a being of pure energy, the God of Hammers, Mjolnir. The God then hurls Thor into a lake. After being left barely able to move, Thor just dries up the entire lake with his lightning and summons his lightning blade to keep fighting, but only to get absolutely humiliated and nearly killed if Odin hadn't jumped in at the very last second And even though Sif quickly teleports the hammer to a place beyond the point of existence Mjolnir flies right back there within seconds slamming straight into Odin back and leaving Thor angrier than ever now demanding once and for all why the god was doing all of this That when the hammer finally explains that everything was Thor's own fault, because after Jane Foster threw it into the sun, Thor never once went back for it, leaving the hammer to burn there all alone, and it was right there that it ended up fusing with the spirit of Mangog. But after hearing all of this, Vader Ray Bill quickly rounds up every hero he could find, and they all rush in to help Thor take the spirit down, but only for not a single one of them leaves even a scratch on Mangog, who just blasts everyone away with one energy explosion, humiliating all of them without any effort. Though realizing he needed to protect his friends, Thor creates an energy tornado to separate himself, Odin, and Mjolnir from everyone else, and it's there that Odin ends up sacrificing himself to pass all of his strength into his son, now transforming Thor into his most powerful form. Thor then finally starts holding his own in the battle, and after contacting Sif and telling her to use the Sword of the Bifrost to cover Mjolnir and teleport them to the exact place where the hammer was created. Thor finally takes back control of the hammer, and in complete agony, he strikes it with so much force that Mjolnir is simply shattered to pieces, with the blow also knocking Thor out so hard that he needs to sleep for four months straight, but only for him to wake up again and come face to face with the hammer rebuilt in its most powerful form, now with Odin's soul stored inside it.
