    Acerca de

The Arab League, officially known as the League of Arab States, stands as the oldest regional political organization on earth. It launched on March 22, 1945, in Cairo with seven founding members: Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan (now Jordan), Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and North Yemen. Today it counts 22 member states across the Middle East, North Africa, and the Horn of Africa, representing over 400 million people. The body functions as a loose alliance where sovereignty remains paramount rather than a supranational government or NGO.

Its primary mission involves strengthening ties among Arab nations and coordinating policies across political, economic, cultural, and social spheres. The charter explicitly renounces violence as a means of settling disputes between members while seeking to advance collective interests globally. Founding delegates aimed to coordinate opposition to the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine, an issue that shaped early debates and remains central to the League's identity.

Leadership flows through the Council where each member holds one vote and the General Secretariat led by a Secretary-General. Ahmed Aboul Gheit has served as the chief administrative officer since 2016. The organization maintains permanent headquarters in Cairo but temporarily relocated to Tunis when Egypt's membership faced suspension from 1979 to 1989 following its peace treaty with Israel. That reinstatement marked a return to the original capital and signaled a shift toward reintegration.

    Misión

The League aims to strengthen relations among member states, coordinate their political, economic, cultural, and social policies, and safeguard their independence and sovereignty. It seeks to promote cooperation in areas such as communication, health, and nationality, and to renounce violence as a means of settling disputes between members. The League also works to advance the interests of Arab countries collectively on the global stage.

    Historia

The Alexandria Protocol of 1944 laid the groundwork for post-World War II cooperation among Arab states. Delegates from seven nations signed the founding charter in Cairo on March 22, 1945, establishing a permanent General Secretariat and a Council where each member held one vote. Early efforts focused on coordinating opposition to the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine, a central issue from the start. A mutual defense treaty signed in 1950 committed members to treat aggression against any one as aggression against all.

Expansion continued steadily throughout the mid-20th century. Libya joined in 1953, Sudan in 1956, Morocco and Tunisia in 1958, Kuwait in 1961, and Algeria in 1962. The League established an Arab Common Market in 1965 to foster economic integration. A significant disruption occurred in 1979 when Egypt's membership was suspended following its peace treaty with Israel. During this period, the League's headquarters temporarily relocated to Tunis, Algeria. Egypt was reinstated in 1989, and the headquarters returned to Cairo.

The 2000s brought the adoption of the Arab Charter on Human Rights in 2004, though its implementation has been uneven. Syria's membership was suspended during the civil war. The League celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2015, with March 22 designated as Arab League Day. Throughout its history, the League has struggled to maintain unity, often criticized for being a forum for regimes rather than a force for collective action.
