Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
SunSunSun
Resumen
Alisa Kujou sits at her desk with a posture so perfect it looks like she was carved from marble. A half-Russian, half-Japanese transfer student at Seiren Private Academy, she commands respect through top grades and an icy demeanor that keeps classmates at arm's length. Yet when she thinks no one is listening, she lets her guard down to mutter her true thoughts in Russian under her breath. She assumes the Japanese students around her are clueless about what she says, but her desk neighbor Masachika Kuze hears every word. He pretends not to understand while secretly enjoying the contrast between her cold public face and her warm private confessions.
Author SunSunSun first posted two short stories on the user-generated novel platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in May 2020. The immediate response caught the attention of Kadokawa Shoten, which began publishing the series as a light novel under the Sneaker Bunko imprint on February 1, 2021. Momoco provided the illustrations that defined Alya's expressive reactions and Masachika's calm, knowing smile. By August 2024, the series had sold over five million copies, proving that its unique premise resonated far beyond typical rom-com audiences.
The story leans heavily on bilingualism as a narrative tool rather than just a gag. Alya's use of phrases like "Ya tebya lyublyu" creates dramatic irony because Masachika understands the weight of her words while maintaining his cool facade. This setup allows the romance to develop slowly without rushing into a relationship. Fans have noted occasional awkwardness in the Russian phrasing compared to natural speech patterns, yet the emotional beats land strongly enough to make the linguistic quirks feel charming rather than distracting.
