Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre

Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, known to fans as CMLL, is a Mexican professional wrestling promotion based in Mexico City. It is the oldest continuously operating professional wrestling promotion in the world, having been founded in 1933 as Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre (EMLL) by Salvador Lutteroth González. CMLL is the foundational institution of Mexican lucha libre, the high-flying, mask-heavy style of wrestling that has become a national cultural treasure. The promotion nurtures local talent and preserves traditions like the sacred masks worn by luchadores, which can be wagered in career-defining matches.

CMLL runs regular shows at its home venue, Arena México, in the Colonia Doctores neighborhood, as well as at Arena Coliseo and Arena Puebla across Mexico. The promotion has also expanded internationally through partnerships with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Major League Wrestling (MLW), bringing international talent into its events and reaching US audiences. The roster is divided into técnicos (the good guys) and rudos (the bad guys), a moral alignment system that has defined lucha libre storytelling for generations.

Over its 90-plus years, CMLL has produced legendary figures who transcended wrestling to become Mexican pop culture icons: El Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Máscaras, and more recently Místico and Último Guerrero. Salvador Lutteroth González fundó la Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre en 1933, con el objetivo de construir una promoción de lucha libre profesional arraigada en la cultura mexicana. Los primeros años fueron difíciles, pero para la década de 1940 EMLL comenzó a generar ganancias y comenzó la construcción de lo que se convertiría en la Arena México. Un famoso incidente temprano ayudó a cimentar la reputación de la promoción: una lucha escenificada donde el luchador Velázquez supuestamente pateó tan fuerte a su oponente Gómez que desalojó su ojo de vidrio. El efecto dramático convenció al público de que la violencia era real y convirtió al villano El Murciélago Enmascarado en el personaje más odiado de Lutteroth.

Durante las décadas de 1950 y 1960, EMLL logró un gran éxito, construyendo arenas adicionales y creando estrellas como El Santo y Blue Demon, quienes se convirtieron en héroes nacionales. La década de 1970 fue más difícil, pero la promoción continuó operando. En 1988, EMLL terminó su acuerdo con la National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), y entre 1991 y 1992 se renombró como Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre.
